Backpacking and Solo Travelling in Sri Lanka
My 2 weeks trip to Sri Lanka

A month ago I traveled throughout the beautiful island of Sri Lanka. It was my first time backpacking. It was also the first time I tried solo traveling (and I fell in love with it). It all started when some of my friends from CDTM (a study program) had planned to visit Sri Lanka during the semester break, and I decided to join them. Funny thing is that I had no information whatsoever about Sri Lanka, and I even had to check its location on Google Maps. An island in Asia? Sounds exciting! I am in. That’s all it took me to decide to travel to Sri Lanka.
After taking all the necessary vaccinations needed for traveling, finishing my last assignment at university, and not having to work any longer, I decided to travel. I booked the flight only one week ahead (probably the most last-minute flight I have booked), and I checked the weather and the main attractions there are to see in Sri Lanka only one night before flying. I am a very spontaneous person as you can imagine.
Weligama and Mirissa beach
Sri Lanka was really different from any other country I have been to. The people, the culture, the religion, the nature, everything felt different. When I arrived in this beautiful country, I headed towards the south, where my friends were located. The south of Sri Lanka is famous for surfing, snorkeling, and parties. We spent a few days in Weligama and Mirissa beach where I can highlight surfing (only 1 euro per hour to rent a board), snorkeling with sea turtles, and beach or boat parties. And of course, a lot of King coconuts!
Coffee shops/bars/hostels I can recommend in Weligama and Marissa beach are:
Hangtime Hostel — with a great view from the rooftop, and really tasty food
Why Not Backpackers’ hostel — if you are into partying
The Doctor’s House — just trust me and go there
Moochie’s — for tasty breakfast bowls
Cheeky Monkey — for surfing and parties
Hiriketiya
Afterward, we spent a few days in Hiriketiya, known for surfing, even though I must admit that the waves were way bigger here and maybe not the bests for a beginner like…
